If you like to read, and if you like talking about what you’ve read, and if you enjoy meeting new people, then the Delaware County District Library’s book discussion groups may be just perfect for you! Each month and at each library location, there is a lively discussion on a wide variety of books, facilitated by a member of the library staff. The books that are discussed range from fiction to nonfiction, romance to suspense, science fiction to award-winners, and everything in between.

This month, at the Powell Branch Library, 460 S. Liberty St., Branch Manager Harla Lawson will facilitate a discussion of The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffeneger on Tuesday, August 23 beginning at 7:00 p.m. My Sister’s Keeperby Jodi Picoult will be discussed at the Ostrander Branch Library, 75 N. Fourth St. on the same day and time, with the discussion led by Angela Cox. Pam Taylor, Head of Circulation at the Main Library, 84 E. Winter St. will lead a discussion of Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides on Wednesday, August 31, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
September’s books are as follows: The Color Purple by Alice Walker at the Main Library on September 28; Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini at the Powell Branch Library on September 27; and Angels and Demons by Dan Brown at the Ostrander Branch Library on September 27. Each location has a limited number of copies of these books available for those wishing to join the discussion. And newcomers are always welcome!

For more information, check the library’s web site at www.delawarelibrary.org and click on “Join a Book Discussion.” If you’d like to receive an email letting you know the titles of upcoming books to be discussed, subscribe to the “Book Discussion Groups” newsletter on the “BookLetters” page of our web site. Did Leroy Jenkins ever run for governor?

A few years ago, a question such as this would have struck fear into the hearts of librarians everywhere. The answer to this question could almost certainly be found in an older edition ofThe Delaware Gazette or The Columbus Dispatch, but without a date, the librarian would have to sit at a microfilm machine and begin reading old newspapers with no good starting point. Thanks to the digital world, many newspapers like The Gazette and The Dispatch are now searchable online. According to an article printed in The Dispatch on September 29, 1993, Jenkins said that he planned to run for governor of Ohio after being pardoned by the state of South Carolina on conspiracy to commit arson charges. In a later article dated October 4, 1993, he said that he was “uncertain” about running. I then checked in The Gazette on microfilm (their online database does not go back to 1993) and found that Jenkins never actually ran for governor.

Is the card game “Five Hundred” a variation of Euchre?

No, according to The Book of Card Games, Five Hundred has some similarities to Euchre and was invented in the early 20th century to appeal to the Euchre-playing public, but it is definitely not a variation of that popular game. Five Hundred is played with a standard deck of cards minus the 6s, 5s, 4s, 3s, and 2s, but with the joker added as highest card in the game. Like Euchre, the jacks are right and left bowers, there is trump, but each player has 10 cards. The winner is the first player or team to reach 500 points. For a complete description and instructions, check in The Book of Card Games.

Can you freeze watermelon?

The Encyclopedia of Country Living gives these instructions for freezing watermelon: Cut the melon into slices, balls or cubes. (Don’t include any rind.) Pour cold, light syrup over the watermelon. You can substitute the juice from the watermelon for the corn syrup or add it to the syrup. Add one teaspoon of lemon juice per 1 cup of syrup for flavor as an option. Cover tightly and freeze. You can also mash watermelon and freeze it like Popsicles, in ice cube trays and/or on a stick.
