Columbus Metropolitan Library helped to bring to life “Storybook Gardens” at this year’s Home & Garden Show – 10 backyard garden oases from Columbus Landscape Association members inspired by these tales: The Very Hungry Caterpillar, The Lorax, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes, Charlotte's Web, The Wind in the Willows, The Secret Garden, Hansel and Gretel, The Tortoise and the Hare and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.
Eric Litwin is a song-singing, guitar-strumming, # 1 New York Times Best Selling author who brings early literacy and music together. He is the original author of the Pete the Cat series as well as the author of The Nuts and Groovy Joe. Eric's books have sold over 10 million copies, been translated into 15 languages, and won 19 literacy awards including a Theodor Geisel Seuss Honor Award. Litwin will appear on the Simple Bath Home Stage at 1:00 p.m. and again on the Dave Fox Garden & Education Stage at 3:30 p.m.
In addition to Library Day special ticket offers, K-12 teachers in area school districts will receive free admission with their ID from Feb. 19 to Feb. 23 – this teacher appreciation offer is courtesy of OCLC. Library cardholders who present their cards will receive two admissions for the price of one after 4:00 p.m. every day of the show. Children 17 years and younger are admitted free every day courtesy of Parkfield Insulation.
Local published authors will also participate in a special Library Day spotlight. At 2:00 p.m. near the Simple Bath Home Stage, visitors can meet Julia DeVillers, Margaret Peterson Haddix, Ruth Emmie Lang, Jen Maschari, Mindy McGinnis, Wolfgang Parker, Edith Pattou, Natalie D. Richards, Nancy Roe Pimm, and Scott Zanon. Earlier in the day near the Storybook Gardens guests can meet Jessica Fries-Gaither, Patricia Sargeant (Olivia Matthews), Linda Stanek, Jeff Wilson, Kerry Winfrey, Robin Yocum. Many of these authors will have their books available for purchase.
Other special programs on Library Day include presentations on My Special Word. In this fun and interactive session led by Columbus native and My Special Word founder Dwight Smith, kids will learn how this simple idea – finding their very own special word and living by it – can change the path of their life, to better themselves and our community. My Special Word is a not-for-profit program with the aspiration of inspiring our youth to think about the wonderful people they are and that they hope to become through the use of positive words.
Columbus Metropolitan Library will lead “G” is for Garden Storytime, inspired by The Home and Garden Show. Parents and kids will hear stories about things that grow and learn tips on using books to be prepared for kindergarten and reading success.
The Dave Fox Garden & Education stage will feature two special presentations for kids and teachers. Spiders will explore how these scary insects are actually the ultimate beneficial insect predator that you want to encourage in the garden. For schools that have wondered how to start a school garden, a session on School Gardens will introduce the things to consider including site selection, soil testing, engaging stakeholders, sustainability of the garden and more. These programs are provided courtesy of the OSU Extension Master Gardener program.
Inside the show’s two buildings, guests will find 350+ local, regional and national craftsmen and professionals covering every area of the home, outside and inside. Attendees can explore emerging trends in homes and gardens, with access to plenty of expert advice. Plus companies will feature exclusive offers available only to attendees, like $100 Ohio Mulch gift cards available for $80 only at the show, and free tomato cages to every guest who wants them.
