Join us online and in our buildings as we celebrate Women’s History Month! Dig into collections that showcase the resilience, achievements, and empowerment of extraordinary women.
Women’s History Month is a celebration of women’s contributions to history, culture and society. It has been observed annually in March since 1987.
Women’s History Month grew out of a weeklong celebration organized by the Sonoma, California, school district in 1978. Two years later, in 1980, President Jimmy Carter issued the first presidential proclamation declaring the week of March 8 as National Women’s History Week. The U.S. Congress followed suit the next year, passing a resolution establishing a national celebration. Six years later, the National Women’s History Project successfully petitioned Congress to expand the event to the entire month of March.
Each year, the National Women’s History Alliance chooses an annual theme; this year, it’s Moving Forward Together: Women Educating & Inspiring Generations.
We hope you’ll join all of us at DCDL as we honor and celebrate the individual and collective contributions of amazing women to our state, country, and world.
