Great GeekWeek

Great GeekFest Comic-Con becomes GeekWeek!

The Great GeekFest is going virtual to become GeekWeek, October 11 - 18

This year would be the five-year anniversary of the free comic-convention for all ages in Delaware County and we had big plans. Even though many of those plans have been put on hold this year, the planning team has still put together a fantastic week of virtual events for our comic-con attendees.

The Great GeekWeek [online] will now be celebrated October 11 – 18. Kicking off the events that week is a Bad Movie Night, presented by our podcast-creating “Library Guy” Luke, on Tuesday, October 13 at 7 p.m. Luke will host a virtual watch party on the Library’s YouTube Channel (TheDCDL) to riff on one of the worst movies of all time, the Roger Corman classic “Bucket of Blood.” Although this is a hilariously bad movie, there may be some content not suitable for all audiences. While this movie does not have a rating on the MPAA movie rating system, we’d give it a low PG-13.

Cosplay

One of the crowning achievements of the past Great GeekFest celebrations has been the Cosplay Contest, and this year is no difference. Start creating your cosplay now, because we’ll be conducting a virtual cosplay contest. Entries must be received at www.delawarelibrary.org/ggf no later than midnight (12:00 a.m.) on Wednesday morning (Tuesday night). There will be no separate age categories this year, and one prize to rule them all. Create your cosplay, take a photo, submit on the website, and we’ll make the grand winner announcement on Sunday, October 18.

Wednesday, October 14 is a morning for our “little geeks.” Mr. George the Librarian will present a Great GeekWeek-themed storytime on the Library’s Facebook page at 10 a.m. The theme is superheroes. Dress up and comment, sing and dance along with Mr. George.

Trivia

Test your wits on Thursday evening at 7 p.m. with a special GeekWeek Trivia competition. Join us on Facebook and YouTube for a special weeknight edition of our Library trivia. We’re going extra geeky, so grab a piece of paper and a pen for score-keeping, pause the video when you need to, and away you go! While the prizes are usually “self-proclaimed genius status,” this time, there are real prizes at stake.

Dungeons and Dragons

Friday night, drink a cup of coffee, snag an energy drink, or do something to make yourself stay awake for an extra special Dungeons & Dragons broadcast of “Librarian’s Lore.” Delaware County District Library staff will play their own special game of D&D and bring fantasy worlds to life. It’s produced by our Maker Annex and will premiere live at 5 p.m. on the Library’s YouTube channel. The adventure may last all the way until 9 p.m.

Dan Santat and Minh Le Vera Brosgol

Finally, we could not be more excited to present two virtual keynote presentations for this Great GeekWeek [online] celebration. Both keynotes will present on Saturday, October 17 in two separate sessions. At 4 p.m. tune in live on YouTube to hear from the award-winning author/illustrator duo Dan Santat & Minh Lê. Enjoy the stories and illustrations of this pair, which include “Lift” and “Drawn Together.”

Then again on YouTube at 7 p.m. YouTube hear from Vera Brosgol, author of the Eisner, Cybils, and Harvey Award-winning graphic novel “Anya’s Ghost.” Her latest book is the acclaimed graphic novel memoir “Be Prepared.” The 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. sessions will both be interactive, taking live questions from the viewers.

Pick up a copy of one of our keynote speakers’ books. You can check them out, or purchase books from our local Delaware book sale partner, Beanbag Books. Pre-ordered copies will have signed bookplates in them by the authors and illustrators. Give Jody a call at (740) 363-0290 or stop by their location at 25 W Winter St in downtown Delaware.
